On the 1st day of Christmas Sydenham gave to me, a starling in a trolley.
Today some last minute shopping, before my wife and I leave London for Christmas, took me back to the starlings of Sydenham Sainsbury’s that I have become so fond of. The sky was quite clear allowing the sunlight to display all the amazing oil slick colours of their plumage.
Some bobbed around in search for scraps to feed on, while others clubbed together, encouraging passers by to throw them bread and McDonald’s chips.
Some stood watch on pavements, while the more social birds chirped at each other.
Hopefully they will always be there, as starling numbers in the UK decline. These birds certainly don’t seem to be diminishing.
