If the life of a deer can be compared to anything human, it is a school disco. The approach to rutting season is a parody of that first hour of the school disco. The boys and girls are completely separate, ignoring each other to get each other’s attention. Posturing takes precedent and the odd head butt isn’t too unusual. Each stag, coming of age, is waiting for the moment when the DJ plays Song 2 by Blur and it becomes acceptable to knock seven shades of the proverbial out of each other to impress the opposite sex. The girls wait in the wings for the slow dance.
